The black Safety 1st Expanding Metal Stair Gate helps define the areas your child can access at the top or bottom of stairs and between rooms. Installed with hardware, it swings out of the way without leaving a bottom threshold to step over. Operate the release lever with one hand, then lift the gate slightly to open it. Adjustable width fits openings from 27 to 42 inches.

Keep the floor clear in the doorway
The gate swings on its hinges to clear the opening. With no bottom threshold, the floor stays unobstructed as you walk through carrying your child. Install it on suitable supports, such as the wood studs, door frames or stair posts specified in the manual.
Turn the lever, then lift slightly
The lever releases the lock with one hand. Lift the gate slightly to swing it open, then guide it back when closing. Check that both the upper and lower latch bolts are engaged. For temporary removal, the hinge button releases the panel using the procedure in the manual.

Does this gate need to be screwed in?
Yes. This model uses hardware mounting and is not a pressure-fit gate. Install the fittings into supports specified by the manual; opening width alone does not confirm compatibility.
Can it swing over the stairs?
No. At the top of stairs, fit the stop so the gate opens only over the floor. It must never swing over the stairway.
Does it close by itself?
Do not rely on self-closing. Guide the gate and lift it slightly when closing, as directed in the manual, then check that both latch bolts are engaged. The locking mechanism does not replace this check.
What opening sizes does it fit?
Openings 27–42 inches (68.6–106.7 cm) wide. The gate is 28 inches (71.1 cm) tall. Also check mounting supports and required clearances in the manual before buying.
When should I stop using it?
The intended age range is 6–24 months. Stop earlier if your child can climb over or dislodge the gate. It does not replace adult supervision.
How do I clean it?
Wipe with a soft cloth and soapy water, wipe again with a cloth dampened in clean water, then dry. Do not immerse it, and regularly check the fittings.
